Jena Jang (born Yeaeun Jang) is a South Korean experimental musician, audio-visual artist, and DIY instrument builder based between Seoul and Prague. Their practice merges harsh noise, improvised vocals, drone, and custom electronics into raw, physical performances that explore emotion, transformation, and the boundaries between human and non-human realms. This work is an essential component of their ongoing research, Contemporary Art of Healing (2019–).
At the heart of their practice is Necrocore, a self-coined concept describing a journey of physical healing through sound and repetitive movement. Influenced by ancient rituals and various somatic methods, it converts intense energy into a form of release, channeling pain and memory into immersive, high-intensity performances. On the technical side, they utilise "personalised tools" such as hand-soldered synthesisers and circuit-bent electronics. They often use "emotional objects" rooted in childhood memories of maternal care—such as the Tupperware Synths and Hairdryer Performance—to transform past memories and vulnerability into ritualistic, somatic sounds for "time-travel" sonic journeys.
Since debuting in 2020, they have toured extensively across Europe and Asia, including Central Asia (Kazakhstan) and North Africa (Egypt). Notable highlights include a double-bill with Saadet Türköz at London’s Cafe OTO, organised by the Chinabot label, and Taxi Salon series in Munich, where they supported acclaimed artists such as Ryosuke Kiyasu, Evicshen, Elvin Brandhi, and Dis Fig. Their debut LP, Final Day, was released by the Berlin-based label Elektramusic.
Beyond live performance, they collaborate with instrument companies such as Error Instruments, Noisio, and Blipbox while continuously developing original circuit designs. Currently represented by Swine Agency for festival bookings, their multidisciplinary portfolio also encompasses work as a video artist (experimental animation and live visuals), a painter, and a workshop leader specialising in vocal improvisation and DIY synth-making.
