JENA JANG
Jena Jang is an experimental musician, audiovisual artist, and DIY instrument builder based between Czechia and South Korea. Their practice merges noise, improvised vocals, and self-built electronics into raw, body-driven performances that explore emotion, transformation, and the boundaries between human and non-human sound. This work is deeply integrated with their ongoing doctoral research, titled 'Contemporary Art of Healing (2019–2026)'.
At the core of their work is “Necrocore,” a self-coined concept describing a journey of somatic healing through sound and movement. Influenced by ancient rituals, butoh dance, and somatic methods, Necrocore transforms intensity into release—channeling pain and memory into immersive performance. Their technical practice involves hand-soldered, battery-powered circuits, using open-source synthesisers and circuit bending. Projects such as the Tupperware Synthesiser and Hairdryer Performance are rooted in childhood memories of maternal care; these emotional objects act as vessels of healing, transforming past trauma and vulnerability into sound and ritual.
Since debuting in 2020, they have toured across Europe and Asia. Recent highlights include a double-bill event with Saadet Türköz, organized by the Chinabot label at Cafe OTO (London), and a performance at UIUI fest (Amsterdam). Through the Taxi Salon series in Munich, they have supported acclaimed artists such as Ryosuke Kiyasu, Evicshen, Elvin Brandhi, and Dis Fig. Their debut LP, Final Day, was released by the Berlin-based label Elektramusic, and they are currently represented by Swine Agency for festival bookings and promotion.
Beyond performance, they collaborate with instrument companies such as Error Instruments (Amsterdam), Noisio (Dresden), and Blipbox (San Francisco) while steadily developing their own original circuit designs. Their multidisciplinary portfolio also encompasses work as a video artist (providing live visuals), workshop leader, art educator, and music curator.
